Tennis for everyone
Sunday 6th June saw Desford Tennis club hold their first Parent Child doubles tournament with many of the younger members persuading their parents to do more than just sit and watch on the sidelines. There were two divisions with those under 12 participating in a friendly round robin competition, with parents supporting and encouraging their young partners. The over 14 section was a lot more competitive with many of the juniors needing to encourage their parents to run a bit more, and not hit so many balls into the net. Alec Matty, the head coach at Desford agreed that the competition had been a great success and thought that many more parents should dust off their old racquets and join in with their children. One mother said her young son felt more confident having played in the friendly competition, and that we should have more tournaments to encourage youngsters to play competitive tennis.
The ‘Junior over 14’ competition was won by Tom Moore with his father Graeme, who showed great stamina in also winning the under 12 section with his younger son Ben. James and Simon Walters were the beaten finalists in the over 14 section having supplied the crowd with a lot of entertainment with their energetic if sometimes unorthodox tennis.
