Tennis for everyone
Desford L.T.C. once again came up trumps when the winners for categories at the Hinckley and Bosworth Sporting Alliance Awards were announced at the presentation evening held on 10th February 2011.
The Club was nominated for 4 awards, and won 3:
Disabled Sportswomen of the Year – Zara Jurenko. Zara has had another wonderful year representing Great Britain at Tennis in the Special Olympics. She has travelled world wide to achieve her legacy of winning the most gold medals ever for a female player at the Special Olympics. She is not only a great ambassador for Team G.B. but is a wonderful asset to this club in it’s quest to make tennis inclusive to all.
Unsung Hero Award – Harry Matty – Harry was most appropriately rewarded for his commitment week in week out in supporting our coach Alec. He is not only generous with his time on a voluntary basis, but his cheerful personality and encouragement to all is wonderful.
Club of the Year (joint with Barlestone F.C.) – Desford was praised for making such rapid progress in the short time since it was first established. Membership has grown beyond expectation, and Clubmark has been achieved in record time.
Perhaps the most significant award was made at the end of the evening when Gillian Jurenko (our Secretary) and the Barlestone F.C. Secretary were asked to take the stage again, to be acknowledged by the Alliance for their hard work in making their clubs so successful.
Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council honours not only the achievements of individuals and teams but also the contribution made by the volunteers who help to run many of the clubs in the borough.
Sue Houghton, Chair of Hinckley and Bosworth Local Sporting Alliance, and Graham Chilvers (Sport Health and Wellbeing Manager) announced the awards and the guests for the evening, Donna Kellog (European Badminton Gold Medalist ) and Rob Mayne, (Deputy Mayor) presented the trophy’s and certificates.
Congratulations Zara, Harry and Gillian. These awards are indeed a great achievement both for the club and you personally.
On behalf of all the Committee and members – Well Done.
