Tennis for everyone
In a finale to their first league season the Men’s league team challenged the Ladies league team to a friendly competition at Desford Tennis Club. The ladies team have had an exceptional season losing only one match and look to be in position to win their league with just one match remaining. The men’s team have had a tougher season having found the quality of tennis played, even in the lower leagues to be a major challenge, although they did manage to win three of their nine matches. The ladies carried their form into the handicap challenge against the men’s team eventually winning by seven games to five. Captain of the men’s team Stephen Fryer congratulated the ladies team on their success but was heard to complain about the very generous handicap given to the ladies, which only allowed the men one serve and gave the ladies a points advantage. The ladies Captain Annette Fryer was joyous in her victory and waived away the comments about the handicap system claiming that the format had been agreed in advance of the match and that the best team had won on the night. Both Captains agreed to forget their differences and all sixteen of the players enjoyed a fish and chip supper and a few drinks at the Sport in Desford clubhouse after the match.
